(Un)usual Business - We are the Time Machines
We are the Time Machines

About this project
(Un)usual Business does collective research on alternative economies – focusing on ideas of commoning and self-organisation. Inherent has been a part of the collective since 2015. At the end of 2015, art institute Casco - Office for Art, Design and Theory invited (Un)usual Business to contribute to their exhibition "We are the Time Machines: Time and Tools for Commoning".

For this, we designed 4 magnetic circles with instructions that introduce the working method of (Un)usual Business. The boards refer to traditional pin-boards that can be seen as icons for organizational communication. By flipping the boards around, and thereby 'switching-off' a colour, a mode for dialogue and discussion is created.

The concept
(Un)usual Business distinguishes four domains:

1. Space for elaboration
2. Space for insight
3. Space for overview
4. Space for action

Within these 'spaces' we aim to bring together theory and practice in our activities. By introducing each space as a colour (green, yellow, black and blue) we maintain the opportunity to intuitively search for relations within these domains. For example: theory, methods, means, implementation or ideas, concept, products, usage

Throughout the exhibition, both the nature of (Un)usual Business and the exhibition itself become visible as the circles are used, changed and presented. In the 5 months of the exhibition, the institute, visitors or anyone else involved with Casco were invited to make use and experiment with the circles in their activities.
