Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Fashion Textiles: Print | Fabulous Technicolour | April 2016

Fabulous Technicolour (the final project for the first year of my undergraduate) was a significant moment in which my personal practice into print design and garment construction would fully integrate; to give my textile designs a three dimensional outcome within the context of wearable fashion. Throughout this project I acquired the skills relevant to the project criteria, ranging from CAD (hand rendered artwork which would then be edited through Photoshop), digital printing, dye sublimation as well as further pattern cutting skills.

At the start of the project, I was given the theme of ‘16th century Japan’ as a foundation upon which I would design a series of digital prints to emulate the given theme. Immediately, I was drawn to the visual language within that of Japanese folklore as my initial inspiration - which would serve as the genesis of my print development.

Whilst exploring a multitude of Japanese folklore and iconography, I discovered a variety of visual and cultural elements which I decided to integrate to form my own narrative. These included a rabbit, which is a culturally significant animal within Japanese folklore and wood block printing, as well as topographic elements ranging from water, mountainous terrain and so on.

Due to the nature of my given theme, I wanted to interpret the theme within a contemporary outcome, to give my prints a more modern aesthetic whilst honouring the historical elements that served as a foundation for my print development - from initial primary research through to the finished print collection.
