Founded in 1992 by ambassador and banker Walther Moreira Salles (1912-2001), the Moreira Salles Institute (Instituto Moreira Salles – IMS) is a non-profit civil organization whose exclusive purpose is to promote and develop cultural programs.
The building: designed in 1948 by architect Olavo Redig de Campos and with landscape design by Roberto Burle Marx, the IMS cultural center was at first the home for the Moreira Salles family, a setting for important Brazilian political and social meetings in the second half of the last century. The renovation project for its new purpose in 1999 took into consideration the preservation of the building’s architectural value and its location in the Gávea district of Rio de Janeiro.
