Hailes Quarry Park Plan

Edinburgh
This project focused on the redevelopment of an existing park; Hailes Quarry Park, which started out as a quarry and becoming a landfill and eventually a park with major drainage issues

Since the site has its boundaries within the city of Edinburgh, it also has a large potential for education, recreation and tourism. It is in a unique position in that along its edges lay two key wildlife corridors, the Union Canal and a railway line that runs between Edinburgh and Glasgow and also just as important the Water of Leith, a major river corridor connecting the foothills to the sea through the heart of the city.

Redefining the site as a mixture of woodland, meadows and grassland gives it the greatest potential for the variety of species so important to the city and allows it to interact best with the existing corridors. The site’s significant urban location presents the opportunity for education, recreation with nature, and other activities. The interaction between people and ecology on site is at the heart of this design proposal.
