Sculpting Stone and Wood
Direct Carving
Mostof my sculptures and works on paper are of people. With these worksI endeavor to enable
viewersto bypass as many cultural, educational, religious, gender-related,and age-related identities
aspossible. By eliminating visual cues that tend to accentuate thesedifferences in us, I invite them,
instead,to spontaneously enjoy the work as a reflection of some aspect theyalready know in
themselves. After all, our innate abilities to love, feel fear and rage, bejoyous and sneaky, be rigid and
clumsy, are completely universal. I firmly reject the notion that to beuniversal, public visual work must
benon subject driven to avoid discord and affrontry. Instead, I chooseto find ways of leapfrogging
overour "walls" to find human connection.
