Book Redesign
Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin
This is a book cover redesign project I did for the cover of one of my favorite books, “Black Like Me” by John Howard Griffin. The book is an autobiography that is set in 1959 throughout the Deep South. Due to his frustrations with his impact in the Civil Rights Movement, Griffin (a caucasian) decided to conduct a social experiment where he would take medication that made his skin tone match that of an African American male. From there, he traversed the Deep South living the life of an unemployed black male.

I decided to design a cover that is simple, yet powerful. One of my challenges was falling into the mindset that “simple” equates to “easy”. The most noticeable aspect of the cover is the ripped paper effect. One reason I did this was to show an interpretation of the “color line” that was prevalent in the South during that time. Another reason for the line was to show the duality of Griffin's identity when transitioning from white to black.

I highly encourage all people to read this book because it gives a lot of insight into the struggles during the Civil Rights Movement and provides a different view of race relations in America. Thanks for viewing my project.
