The National Honor Society

A student at Phillipsburg High School, Andrew Horun has a deep passion for wrestling. Andrew Horun’s interests and achievements go beyond sports, however, as exemplified by his induction into the National Honor Society (NHS) for 2015-2016.

Although there were many regional and local honor societies in existence in 1921, it was at this time that the NHS was officially established by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. From the first Alpha Chapter at the Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, there are now NHS chapters in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, a number of US territories, and Canada.

The purpose of the NHS is to acknowledge high school students who have shown distinction in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. A high school student can become a member of the society by undergoing a selection process that culminates with induction into the National Honor Society chapter of the school.

Those who are eligible for membership invitation are students in grades 10-12 who satisfy the prerequisites for membership as detailed by the NHS school chapter. The criteria are based on the four key concepts of the NHS. The first is scholarship. The student must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0, an 85 average on a scale of 100, or a B average. The second is service, hence the student must have made contributions as a volunteer to the community or school.

The third concept is leadership. The qualified student must be resourceful, an idea contributor, and a good problem solver, these attributes being gleaned from his or her community and school activities. The fourth concept is character, wherein the qualified student must exhibit excellent qualities of reliability and honesty, as well as show genuine respect and concern for others.
