Documented Reality
Kaskaskia Island, IL
Urban Scale Project | Co-designed
In an effort to revibe the company's television network vision, Google is purchasing Kaskaskia Island to create a space where a new form of reality television can actualize. The island will become the ultimate destination for those who want to create their own ideals of reality and document their particular views of their world to share.

The existing landscape informs rooftop living. The Kaskaskia "grid" is redefined to create separate neighborhoods of reality show living. The landscape becomes a combination of astroturf and pavement. Portions of the grid are carved away, revealing an uninhabitable swamp. The houses are spread across the landscape in modular form, each house representing an existing "reality show" house, creating variety.

The outlined landscape of the roof level is reflected on the ground plane of the island. Neighborhood living is replaced by studio and/or production spaces in which the inhabitants can visit to create their own documentaries. A universal grid system is used to create the modular forms of the warehouses. These come together in various ways to create the overall forms of the warehouse spaces. The "L" becomes the iconic form which is further manipulated based on context and function.
