Dream for Sale is a story about people living in a lost place – The Salton Sea. In the early 20th Century created by a breach of a dike, today it is the biggest lake in California, surrounded by desert – a saltlake in a hostile environment. There used to be big plans for tourism during the 50s and 60s, but they have never been completed. The area is fighting against man-made environmental problems. However the faith in the own will, the own abilities and being successful without any instructions of an authority dominate. A fundamental idea of today’s American self-concept, which has already been shaped by the early settlers.
On the basis of a photographic essay, in the form of a book, residential protagonists, the area itself and societal change are presented. Further information are given in the text layer. The work shows a subjective view on the life in the desert and the American selfconcept. A social comment by Martin Lamberty.
The postcards are original scans from the time of the tourist boom during the 60s. Printed on Metapaper extrarough warmwhite 150 g/m² with a refined frontlayer in shiny silkscreen to imitate the look and feel of a real postcard.
