S01 - Il Magazine di Serie is a TV series magazine designed during the Editorial Lab at Iuav University of Venice in 2015, a course led by Francesco Franchi and Davide Mottes.
The aim of this project was to improve our workflow as a little editorial group, finding new ideas to compete in a "new age" for magazines and challenge ourself in layout, typography and illustration tasks.
We started the project researching for competitors that are actually in the market, analyzing them in their good and bad sides.
Then we choose three magazines to keep as a reference.
One was for its meaningful way to use layout and typography.
One was for the topic similarity and its ability to engage audiences.
One was for its craziness and its beautiful design.
For the cover we decided to create something that could stand out in the bookshop, something strange. We created our logo as a part of the main illustration and it will be modified based on the cover story of the future issues.
We decided to divide our magazine in four sections, giving them a strong differentiation using different colors, typography and mood. This kind of distinction helped us also to improve the reading rhythm, with short and fresh articles at the beginning and at the end and more challenging ones in the middle.
Blaulo is the opening section, it starts with fresh and short news, infographics, tests and lightweight articles.
Zoom is our second section, the one with the cover story. It uses a different kind of typography, paper, grid and illustrations. We put a lot of effort to make it look alike a newspaper of the beginning of the century (due to the fact that Penny Dreadful is set in those years), also with tailor made advertising.
Rec is the third section where you can find in depth articles, interviews and previews of the upcoming TV series.
Shuffle is the last section. It talks about fashion, video games, gadgets, science, books and comics. That's why it's called shuffle.
Ok, it was quite long..so thank you for having reached this point! :)
