The assignment
The assignment was to create a new souvenir for a Dutch World Heritage. This was a  a solo project, every person in our group got their own heritage. My heritage was Schokland. This wasn't an ordinary assignment. If your idea was good and original enough you had the chance that your idea was going to be exhibited through the Netherlands, at every Dutch world heritage. My idea was selected to be exhibited! which I am very proud of ofcourse :)
History of Schokland
Before I tell about my concept you need a bit of explanation about Schokland, otherwise i would be hard to understand it.
Schokland used to be an island in de zuiderzee. Nowadays it lies in Flevoland and during the drainage of flevoland it became an island on soil.
Schokland is a world heritage because of its rich history; There were skeletons and objects found from all the way back to the stone age. And ever since people lived on the island, the people had to fight against the water that took away more and more land every year. At one point it wasn’t safe to live there anymore and the island had to be evactuated. 1 person was left behind, because there needed to be someone to watch the lighthouse. One night there was a big storm, so big that the water smashed all the grave’s open. skelletons and skulls floated around, and the man that watched the lighthouse had gone mad and was put in a madhouse.
The concept
With this kind of stories and historical events i came with the idea to design chocolate bars. Only few people know Schokland and its history, so this seemed a very good way to educate people more and make a souvenir that people want to buy.
The chocolate bars, each tell a different story. You can see what the story is about on the outside of the bar but also on the chocolate bar itself. I also played with the flavour of the chocolate, that way it really is connected to Schokland. Its a bit like tony’s chocolonely, with a caramel and sea salt flavour, you taste the flavour of Schokland in the past, when it was located in the zuiderzee, and the taste of nowadays when it is located on soil in Flevoland. Sweet and Salt.

What i have learned from this project
It was a very open assignment, you really had the freedom to create anything you’d want. So I’ve definitely learned to work in a different way than the “normal” @work assingments. What I have also learned is how to design an actual product. We only learn how to create something graphic, And for this assignment I have had to made molds for the chocolate bar, made real chocolate and plaster bars with those, and designed the packaging for this.

Ups and downs
The most fun part was shooting the photo’s, I had to make the people look shocked and have them eat chocolate at the same time so it was kind of awkward for the people who modelled to be photographe like that. But that also made it really fun to do.
The hardest part was making the packagings. Designing them wasn’t hard but to actually realize the wrapper around the chocolatebar with fold and cutting lines was hard, since I am not so great at measuring sizes and folding.
