Funeral Suits — Islands Apart (2016)

Islands Apart is the second album from Irish band Funeral Suits. I have worked with the band since their formation in 2008 and collaborated on the design and artwork for of all of their previous singles and EPs.

The title for this album was inspired by the idea that our relationships are shaped by invisible and self-constructed barriers. At the heart of this is a belief that by recognising these things we can eventually overcome our sense of disconnection.

I was drawn to the image of a semi-formed earth; it's an island in the sea of space. This image can be read both as being foreboding and as hopeful. For me, I prefer to view it as a positive and life-affirming image. It's a picture of second-chances and an acknowledgement of our own imperfections.

Lyrically, much of the album explores the theme of gratitude and encourages listeners to appreciate all of the amazing things and opportunities that life brings. This felt like a fitting way to evoke this idea.
The album was recorded in Berlin with producer Jochen Schmalbach and was mixed in Dublin by James Darkin. The album was released on Rubyworks in November 2016. You can listen to it and buy it here
