DAYS

These paintings were from my solo show : "Days", which was held at Vinyl On Vinyl Gallery in Makati City, Philippines in November 2015. Inspired by the photography of Corinne Day.

The following is the write up that explained the concept of the show:

There’s a certain stage in everyone’s life when everything seems to wind down. We go through a sort of invisible recalibration, with shifts and changes so subtle we never realize it’s happening. Until we catch ourselves going through the same motions, the same structured days, shuttling back and forth, work and child care and endless suburbia, running on an automatic loop.

In this show, moments are plucked from the monotony and rendered in large scale canvases. This approach was heavily influence by 90s photographer Corinne Day and her distinct pared down aesthetic. She photographed bare faced, unadorned women (the complete antithesis of the supermodels of the day) set against nondescript bedrooms, grungy bathrooms and empty apartments. Somehow, Day coaxed a kind of eerie beauty from these scenes.

“Days” are an attempt to reveal that same kind of beauty. Muted, melancholy colors, represent the boredom, repression and regret humming just beneath the surface of an ordinary life. But each painting also contains the hidden grace in the small rituals, in the seconds between breathing and blinking, and the bits and pieces of quiet we collect and conserve whenever we can.
