The design of the building is inspired by the concept of evolution that itself is the ascension. The transition from old, our existing historical structure, into new structure that resembles the helical shape of DNA strand proves that as anything evolves it retains the value of its roots while progressing and enhancing with time.

As the visitor moves through the structure, they are continuously ascending through a spiral path into the next activity area. La piece de resistance of the ascension journey ends in a cantilevered restaurant overlooking the water and natural milieu. The spiral shape of the building continuously provides the visitor with a visual connection to nature and people as they transcend throughout the different spaces within. The building encircles an open courtyard or green space that welcomes outdoor activities and interaction with nature.

Environmental sustainability was taken into consideration with the design of Alton Mill community centre to minimize resource consumption, optimize building performance and promote the health of building occupants and users. Sustainable design principles were incorporated where possible from building orientation to landscaping.
