Film Titles & Promotion
Sitting In a Tin Can, a film by Alex Masterson

The aim of this project was to create opening film titles, a promotional poster and DVD packaging for the short science fiction film 'Sitting In A Tin Can.'

My aim with both the film titles and the promotional ephemera of this project was to highlight elements of the film’s narrative and thematic motifs. The film is a science fiction piece. The main character is Philip Harrington, a scientist living alone in a space station as part of an orbital habituation experiment. He is under the care of a computer system called ‘Mother.’ When he loses communication with the outside world, he begins to spiral into insanity.

The self-authored imagery references the space station habitation with food, plant life and scientific equipment. The piece references the characters decline into mental instability through a rising tension in the audio and the transition from a sterile to a contaminated environment. The typography of the titles is based on organic chemistry formulas. With the poster, this theme of division between sterility and contamination is continued. The DVD packaging is based on sci-fi materials, transparent materials revealing what is within. The motifs of the packaging itself is based in the food trays and tools.
