Sheers (she's sheer)

Produced as an edition of 12, this diptych was inspired by a frustration with the objectification of the female body. The position of the scissors represents two opposing ideas of the female body, one with the legs open, and one that is more prudish. This reflects a struggle that many women experience where they may feel that they are seen as one extreme or the other. Alternatively the pair can be looked at as representing both male and female bodies. The fragmented photograph in the background contains a cord that runs vertically down the centre of the print. The scissors appear to be cutting the cord.
I wanted to create this print as something that someone would display in their home or workplace without thinking anything of. A lot of people identify with scissors as a part of their title. People who work with sheers such as hair dressers, seamstresses, designers and scrapbookers all use scissors, and may feel that it represents them in some way. Without knowing what the print is really about would be choosing to attach their own meaning to it.
