She was born in a small village in the state Maharashtra. According to the traditions of the late 19th century, Rama was married off at the age of 11 to Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade- a man more than twice her age. At the time women's education was a taboo. Justice Ranade, a social reformer, took it upon himself to educate his young wife, flying in the face of social norms and his disapproving family members. With that education and her husband's support, Ramabai went on to fight for women's education and social evils like child marriage and the miseries heaped upon widows.
This is an artistic take on a young Ramabai, dressed in the traditional finery of a Marathi married woman. It draws inspiration from a Zee Marathi television series Unch Maza Zoka, which documents her life and struggle.
