Samurai mask - Kabuto & Hoate

Samurai Helmet
illustration and plywood sculpt

Samurai armor was very complicated. On their heads they used to wear Kabuto (helmet) and Hoate (face mask). Together with other parts of armor it was both protecting and showing their house. They were terryfing because they supposed to scare enemy. As a part of great japanese history they do not have any match in other cultures and represent what i really like in Japan - connection between culture, art, and heritage which is very indepentent, and even now stands against globalization trends.

To make tribute to this art of war I made vector illustration of such mask. It was then moved to photoshop to add colors, scratches and gradients.
Before it reached Photoshop, mask was created in vector with Adobe Illustrator. I made it because i want to make special 5 layer cut in plywood with laser engraving and then connect these parts to make wooden art representing 3D image of such great mask.
6 layers of plywood are assembled together to make 3D look. Project is made of birch plywood, but background layer was painted with oak paint to add extra dimension.
