Botanical Air Purifier
Flair is a botanical air purifier for urban apartment dwellers. This organic air cleaner harnesses a plant's natural capabilities to purify the air. Drawing on NASA research, the botanical air purifier removes common household VOCs, including formaldehyde and other toxins emitted from paint, carpets, and adhesives, and recirculates clean air into the user’s home while beautifying it.
Plants & Humans
The project started off with the interest in the relationship between plants and humans in the home context. There are already some established uses of plants in the home: For ornamental purpose & for food.

Plant's Natural Ability
After research into papers and documentation, it was found that plants have the natural ability to break down VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) around the roots. Living in a man-made urban environment where Indoor air has 2 to 5 times more pollutants, definitely more can be done to use plants for the cleansing of indoor air.
Challenging Benchmarks
This project aims to question and challenge the current similar airflow schematics of plant purifier products on the market that are basically based on NASA research findings. How else can the pot be designed?
Indicative Scientific Experiments X Design Explorations
After a rigorous phase of research into the air purifying capabilities of plants and related issues, it is discovered that there have been no findings on:
1. How position of fan and configuration of system affects removal rate
2. Design of the vessel affects removal rate
2. Design of the vessel affects removal rate
Experiments were carried out revolving these two factors.
As the exploration process is neither a pure scientific nor design one, exploration of schematics and forms are carried out concurrently to seek a balance between aesthetic and function.
