Saunter: reveries on time.

Saunter is a publication where each student designed a spread from 3 given texts. The aim of the project was to use expressive typography to illustrate each passage. My main page in the book was the last page, where time is illustrated out of birds. My layout is created completely out of typography: each little bird is made out of words, and they flow from the tree, and into the jar to illustrate time and then the conclusion of the publication.
Aside from this spread, I was the lead designer of the publication team. Two other designers and I worked on creating an identity for the book, which included typesetting the credits, introduction, cover, and everything else.
One of the supplied texts was the script from the movie "Groundhog Day", so I designed a groundhog made out of the script. At the bottom of each page, you can see a silhouette of the groundhog. On every page, he gets closer to the right side, and appears as he is running.
Research is not always just sitting at a computer, or roaming the halls of a library. Research is engaging in critiques. It is trial and error. It is being experimental and pushing the boundaries. It is making mistakes at 3am, thinking “how on earth will I finish this project in time!?” Most of all, it is learning how to deal with obstacles.
I entered Saunter into a research show at MacEwan University. I created this poster which shows how design is research, and what really goes into creating a unique spread.
