Atmos aims to capture the essence of my surroundings that evokes memories of the two cities I have resided in prior to living in Wellington. This series does not attempt to represent reality as they are, but rather seeks to depict the emotional effects my surroundings have on me. By using blurred focus, the images are deliberately captured out of focus to achieve ambiguity. This results in the absence of ‘real’ subject matter and point of focus in the photographs, allowing colours and forms to be the main focus. This in turns reinforces the sense of atmosphere and emotional reaction I receive from being in locations with elements of familiarity to them. The obscurity also prevents the explicit announcement of the location in the images, intentionally executed to implicate the two cities I resided in. Furthermore, defocusing the images allows me to portray similarities between my two previous homes and current one, and how the resemblance between them can evoke memories and bring an emotional reaction out of me.
