Boisbuchet workshop 2016

Furniture that transforms space held by Muller Van Severen
Domaine de Boisbuchet, France

"When we think of making furniture, space is always very important. We want to explore dimensions, both in the piece itself as well as in the compositions we make. We try to involve walls, ceilings and floors, but also respect the empty parts. And when we think of making a chair, we also think of a table and a lamp etc. We try to create a world and not just an element. However, the elements of this world should be small worlds themselves – like little architectures." -
Muller Van Severen

With this philosophy in mind we were asked to design and build a double function object, that interacts with it's surroundings, within the domaine, through a period of one week.

Story: Behind the library, I found this corner, that could fit a perfect chair and table, with an arch form, communicating with the architecture that surrounds it. By making a cardboard scale model to assure proportions and dimensions were right, I straight away set of to build the final model. Made from scrapped steel sheets, that were lying around in the workshop. After the first piece was completed, I decided to expand the idea into an asymetrical, arched stool, that would complement the space further more. The chosen color for both pieces was obviously "Rouge Basque", an ode to it's neighbouring doors and windows of the library building. This basque red brought out the presence and simple geometry of both furniture pieces.
