GRAPHIC DESIGN PRINCIPALS
MODULE ONE -- THE DESIGN PROCESS

DEFINE THE PROBLEM
Design an advertisement to encourage students between the ages of K-12 to wash their hands in the bathroom.

RESEARCH
Google search of images for hand washing signs. Talking with a sixteen year old, thirteen year old and eight year old about what kind of sign would encourage them to wash their hands in the bathroom. Then discussing with them different design ideas for the ad.

BRAINSTORMING
I took ideas from my image search and ideas from talking with the kids to come up with a basic concept for the ad. This concept was “Be a Superhero, Wash Your Hands, Save a Life!” What person hasn’t thought about being a Superhero or having a special power. We all have the power to wash our hands after using the bathroom to stop the spread of germs. Which by simply washing your hands you have the power to save a life.

EVALUATING IDEAS
I took my concept to my design teacher and discussed the Superhero idea. We discussed the fact most kindergarteners can’t read yet and older kids could. So the ad had to be something kindergartener that can’t read yet could visually understand the meaning of. The ad also still had to appeal to all the kids.

SKETCHING
I played with different versions  of the superheroes. I also wanted the superheroes to represent both genders and be multi-ethnic so it appealed to all the kids. Finding the right look would be important in appealing to the kids and getting the message across visually.

CONCEPT GENERATION
The concept would revolve around bubbles and Superheroes. Most kids understand at an early age that bubbles represent water and soap and getting clean.

PRESENT & GET FEEDBACK
I presented my first working art board to my design teacher and he gave me his feedback. He didn’t like the superheroes flying through the bubbles or the placement of the bubbles. He played with my ad and moved things around to show me how things could improve the ad. He also suggested a bigger font.

REVISE
I ended up tweaking my background bubbles placement and getting rid of my superheroes flying through the bubbles. I swapped out my flying superheroes and went to a line up of superheroes, and bolder and bigger style font.

Then I represented my ad to my design teacher. This time he was happy with the ad I presented him. I asked him if there was anything else I could change or tweak to make it better. He said “No, and turn it in.”
