New Annexe to Council Hall and Divisional Commissioner's Office in Pune
The Council Hall that was built in 1871 is a historic Landmark of Pune City. The firm of Kimaya - Architects, Urban Designers, Conservationists, Valuers, Interior Designers recently designed an 80000 square feet extension to the old building. Considerations of heritage conscious new design, green buildings, climate conscious design, sensitive infill and sensible urban design were on the agenda.

The steel and toughened glass porch is a weather cover at about 35 feet height and is the most dominant feature of the building that draws in the people into the building.
The entrance atrium is a critique on the colonial porch that was mean't for dropping off and picking up people from and into vehicles. The atrium enlarges the traditional porch to create a monumental space for people to gather, wait, feel welcome and enjoy the architecture of the building.
Textured paint used for the twin double columns give a feeling of uniqueness and monumentality to the entrance.
Glass mosaics in bands give a sense of detail and relieve the monotony of the materials used in the building. They are also useful in giving a sense of recall between the new and old buildings.
The building wraps around a large banyan tree which is the focus of the building across the entrance atrium.
The tower of the new building recalls the tower of the older building in a different context and sequence for the building. As urban design the tower conforms to the colonial vernacular of institutional buildings. The connecting driveway between the towers is a physical and philosophical link between the new and the old.
