B&Q - Plywood Furniture

The idea behind this project was to create a simple furniture collection that utilises natural material, whilst providing a durable and easy to assemble structure. The furniture requires no hardware for assembly, the components slot together incorporating high tolerance joints to ensure a secure fit. A matt lacquer finish was selected to ensure the natural colour of the plywood is maintained. 

The furniture has been installed into the B&Q Head Office, Southampton. The collection is located in the main reception of the building with the aim of providing a flexible solution to accommodate the diverse needs of the space.

#01 - SKETCH + CAD DEVELOPMENT

#02 - PROTOTYPE 

Multiple prototypes were created to evaluate and revise designs. Ergonomic and structural details were improved with each prototype to ensure a considered solution was achieved.

#03 - Manufacture

Once the design had been finalised, CNC tool paths were created and sent to the manufacturer. The furniture was CNC’d routered from B&Q 18mm (T) Plywood, the parts were cut out from the sheet material, sanded and finally lacquered.

#04 - Assembly

The furniture requires no hardware for assembly. The flat-pack structure enables the collection to be assembled + disassembled in minutes, providing hassle-free transportation for the user.
