Bei Erich

The title is German and means "at Erich's place". Erich is Erich Mielke, the former Minister for State Security of the former German Democratic Republic (DDR). The Ministry for State Security (= MfS, "Stasi") and its former leader belong to the darkest chapters of recent German history. The MfS was the headquarters of the maybe most sophisticated surveillance system of its time and possibly the most effective and repressive secret police agency so far. Stasi considered itself the "shield and sword of the SED party". Milke's ministry collected and kept files of thousands of innocent people, whose only crime was to have a deviant opinion. The MfS was the place from which Mielke directed his army of informants and devised methods for hidden psychological distruction of so-called dissidents and planned covert operations, even outside the country, especially in West-Germany (BRD). Today a small part of the gigantic complex of buildings at the Normannenstraße in Berlin is used as a museum, which has preserved some of the rooms with their original furniture and equipment. My photo series documents the interior of his ministry with its musty, stuffy atmosphere in its offices, conference rooms, parlors and lounges.
