Red-Shanked Douc - Primates On The Edge

The video footage of the Red-shanked douc was filmed in Vietnam in May 2015 with the help of the Douc Langur Foundation field researcher. Later I set up an interview with the founder of this NGO. I was fascinated by their story and wanted to help in any way I could. The opportunity arose to pitch an article to Wildlife Photographic Magazine after I'd become a regular contributor.

As the article by the NGO took shape, it was clear that the video would need to cover more than just the behaviour of the doucs. My partner, Reehana Shihab, produced a script and I put together a storyboard that combined video footage, stills from the NGO and motion graphics to be produced by a freelancer.

I sourced a narrator, Ian Russell. He was chosen because was able to provide a narration sympathetic to the plight of the doucs and to the cause of the NGO.

I also sourced a motion graphics artist, Olena Trichina. Her background in a media production agency meant she had the skills and experience to deliver the right style of animation for the video.

All the elements came together very quickly and the video was produced in time for Wildlife Photographic’s deadline.
