Project - Digital Image Manipulation
Photoshop exercizes
This project was quarter-long where I started with an idea for character that represented a student, only made out of computer parts. I started with a sketch, and then took pictures of my own printer and MacBook notebook and found some other images online. Then, the rest of the quarter was spent putting "Computer Critter Chris" together and gradually improving him as I learned new techniques in Photoshop CS5.5.

My initial photos of the laptop and printer weren't very satisfying, as the lighting didn't work well (frame 2), so I reshot them to get that fixed. I had originally used my own images for everything, but was really not thrilled with the blue cast everything had, and wound up replacing them with images I scrounged up on the web. My instructor shot down my easy way out with the white smiley face drawn on the screen, so I made the eyes out of clip-on web cams (I know, the MacBook already has an iSight camera in the screen frame, but what was I to do?) and found a cool smile to incorporate. The background image is of a library, and I cloned out several lights and some other distracting stuff on the wall behind "Chris" and then blurred and darkened it a little to make him pop out. The shadowing cast by him on the desk he is standing on has varying densities as though created by multiple light sources. His feet and shadow intrude into the title area both on purpose and because that's where the library image ended, but that added to sense of depth to the piece. Just for fun, I added a second version of him running over. I added a printout of Michelangelo's Vitruvian Man and "I love the Art Institute of Colorado" sticker for some more personality.

This project used a lot of my existing Photoshop skills, and I learned a lot about alpha channels and masking.
