Vegetable Garden Poster. The big Making-Of

Available in my webshop:
I had the idea of a vegetables poster in my mind for quite a while. So finally i took the time to make a first sketch and figuring out what to include in this collection.
The local market was a very good inspiration: I bought myself a big box full of fresh stuff. It was hard to make a selection and there were a lot of housewives, telling me which vegetable i should draw.
Lucky for me, it was one of those few sunny days in this year. Perfect for the fotoshooting of all my vegetables. My fathers old gardening hat is on the fotos, too, but unfortunately, there was no place for it on the final poster..
tep one: Doing some size-tests: I want to find out, how big i have to arrange the objects, so that they can be drawn in a naturalistic way, but yet with a graphical look. It's very necessary to see that in original size to make the right decision.
he final sketch: i want to see, what i draw, so i work this way. If i don't see the real object, i can't do the right graphical abstracion of lines and shadows.
Also the compostition is a very hard part of the the whole work: Arranging all the things to fit to the poster is half the battle.
Finally to the drawing desk: this is the nice part of the process. While drawing i love to listen to audio books. So i don't think to much about what i'm doing and it get's me in the flow. This time, it was Stephen Hawking's "History of Time"
Finding the right lines is very challenging. How many do you have to draw to make it understandable.
I draw the color separation by hand: each layer a new paper. It takes me quiet a while, but so i can controll very good the final drawing. For each object, there are several layers for shadows, light, special colors and so on.
Now the digital process: scaning all the papers and putting them together. it's not my favorite part of work. But the good thing with the computer is: you are able to work also if you are very tired. When i'm drawing by hand with the brush, i have to be very fit and aware of what i'm doing. If not, the drawing get's imediately bad.
Coloring: It's tough work, but it makes a lot of fun to see the drawings coming alive.

The big moment: Opening the package :)
And with the vegetables, i bought on the market, i made a yummi meal for the family. The leftovers were a good studio-lunch...
Bon appetit!
