Tension Clock
2 Day Project
I think this was the first piece of 3Dwork that was worth bringing home from college.Inspiration came from a trip to saint Ives in October 2011, where I firstencountered the sculptural works by Barbara Hepworth. In some of her work, suchas Stringed Figure (Curlew) she uses sheet metal and string to createinteresting shapes with an emphasis on material, space and representationalvalues. I simply appreciated these unique forms on face value and admired theoriginal way in which she combined materials.

For almost a year, this inspired clock project was unnamed. Tension seemedappropriate, as the tension provided by elasticated cord provides so muchfunction of this design. It holds the thin strip of aluminium in a perfectcircle, in addition to signifying the 12 points.

I used altered patterns across 3 layers of tense cord to give a sense of depth. The clock hands actually move between these layers- which was a happy accident. The face of the clock and internal face of the aluminium ring have been paintedmatt black to emphasise the significance of the white cords. The external faceof the ring has been left in it's original unfinished state, in order to behonest to the material and all marks and defects that signify that it has beenrecycled from something else. The MDF face of the clock is also made from scrapmaterial- evidenced by marks on the unpainted back. As for the paint, it camefrom an old can that had been left lying around from another student's previousproject.

I find huge satisfaction in using only available resources. Not least of allfor the fact that I paid nothing but £5 for a decent clock mechanism. I hatenoisy clocks
