Elegy of Life is a faculty project developed by two groups from different branches
of the University of Porto: one from engineering (FEUP) and one from graphic design (FBAUP).
We are the graphic design team and we are presenting what was our contribution to the game.
The main ideas for the gameplay and its background story came from the engineering group.
Elegy of Life is a third person adventure and puzzles game. The hero lives in a cursed world
where music is the essence of life, without it, he and his people die.
We were in charge to take this story and expand its visual concept. We took our inspirations
from movies like Laputa Castle in the Sky and Atlantis, as well as games like The Legend of
Zelda: Wind Waker and Skyward Sword, Shadow of the Colossus and Journey.
The color range for the elements designed ended up to be mostly grey, white and aqua green to
combine with the idea of a floating island full of light and minimalist architecture. Although at first
we also imagined another side for this same world, much darker and apocalyptical, the more positive
version was the only one developed.
Beyond the buildings, we also designed the hero, the villagers, the bosses and the weapons.
After we settled the concept art we started modeling and rigging the assets in Blender and created a serie of animations for the characters and bosses.
