Hobby Tools for Elderly Users
The brief was to redesign an existing pair of hobby tools specifically for an elderly market.
At the beginning, the main consideration was placed upon product ergonomics and ease-of-use, however it quickly became apparent through focus group discussion that ergonomics was not considered as important to the elderly market as initially assumed. Users wanted to invest in an exceptional pair of tools and expressed an interest in product quality and durability although did not, at first, care for aesthetics.
With this in mind, the project took a change in direction and prioritised design quality, looking into materials and finishes. The result had to give a reason to warrant investment through superb quality and durability.
Despite users originally not caring for aesthetics, the material combination of traditional hardwood with a modern polymer twist offers both extreme durability and captivates an essence of high quality. Upon return to the focus group, the products certainly changed opinion towards aesthetics for the better, and were very well received.
