Aspiring artist and scientist, nine years old
“I’m usually the odd one out. I often find that at school; nobody wants to hang out with me. I think that’s because I don’t really fit in – I don’t always like the same things as my friends. Sometimes they are quicker at things than me, sometimes I am quicker than them – but it never seems to work the same for me as it does everybody else. It never feels easy.
“I think outsiders can be an outsider anywhere – it all depends on the people around them.
“My parents are also outsiders. They do interesting things that people, like my friends, don’t understand. I think people can be jealous of that, which makes me, and my parents, even more on the outside.
“The cool thing is that, being an outsider, you can enjoy being alone and you see things differently. But this can also be a little lonely, and sometimes it makes me feel sad inside.”
