Bambisanani: The First Five Years
This 13 x 11 inches hardback book, written and laid out by David Geldart and Duncan Baines was created (completely in-house by our school) to chart the first five years of the Bambisanani Partnership. Over 30 copies were printed as well as an iPad version.

The Bambisanani Partnership is a unique collaboration developed by St. Mary’s Catholic High School, Menston in the UK, and Mnyakanya School in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. Bambisanani is the Zulu word for “working hand in hand” and aptly encapsulates the partnership between the two schools. With the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the Bambisanani Partnership has used sport as a major catalyst to develop international understanding, education, health and leadership. The initiative, which began in 2006, has gained both national and international acclaim.

The typefaces used were Adobe Garamond for the body (11pt with generous leading) and Helvetica (Bold) for headings. Adobe Garamond proved very readable at smaller sizes because of its tall x-height.

Figures about the book:

"A wonderfully illustrative book. It is good to see the great work that you have been doing over the past 5 years in your school."
Paddy Ashdown, UNICEF UK President

"It was inspiring to see how the original link brokered under the project has gone from strength to strength to become embedded across both communities and make a real difference to the lives of young people in the UK and South Africa. Alongside the quotes from the young people involved in the project, what particularly impressed me was the continual emphasis on mutuality. Achieving an equitable and sustainable school partnership where both schools learn and benefit takes real commitment and effort. Both schools should be congratulated on what they have achieved over the last 5 years."
James Schone, British Council

"It really is special. It is a fantastic story of what has been achieved over the years. I am sure that we will be dipping into it for years to come for anecdotes and stories."
Lorraine Thomas, Corporate Sustainability HSBC

“This is an exciting initiative that brings young people together to learn from each other in a global dimension. The young people and teachers are working together with tremendous effect; this programme has my full support and deserves every success.”
Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa
“A good start has been made but there is much more to do; it will only be achieved by working hand in hand.” David Geldart
