Portmarnock Golf Club
Premier website for Ireland's premier golf links
Client: Portmarnock Golf Club
Year: 2015
My Role: Lead Digital Designer
Services: UI/UX Design, Wireframes, Testing and Quality Assurance

Portmarnock Golf Club founded in 1894 is consistently ranked amongst the top golf courses in the world. With a rich history closely aligned to the progression of golf in Ireland, Portmarnock has hosted many major professional and amateur events including multiple Irish Open Championships, the Walker Cup, the Irish Amateur Close Championship and the British Amateur Championship. From Sam Snead to Seve Ballesteros, some of golf's best known names have tested their skills here on the north Dublin peninsula. Considered by many as one of the fairest links courses in the world it delivers an incredible challenge and true test of golf.

The main challenge of the project was to position Portmarnock Golf Club as main golf course destination for international visitors by building a stunning website that will catch their attention before the visit, show them all that Portmarnock has to offer before and tell the rich history of the club.

We decided to focus the design on beautiful imaginary of the course links, the clubhouse and historic photos to help the user experience the club as if he was already there. To tell the story of tradition and quality we've created elegance-inspired colour palette and timeless typographic style based on serif and hand-written fonts. We've also worked closely with a copywriter from the wireframe stage to ensure that client's story and objectives are well expressed and consistent story is told through copy and design across whole website.

At the end we delivered the website that confidently expresses client's value statement: "Ireland's Premier Golf Links". The success of the project was recognized by Realex Payments Web Awards which nominated it as one of finalists in Sports category.

My Role
As Lead Designer on the project I was responsible for successfully translating project brief into wireframes and designs by closely collaborating with project manager, copywriter, development team and the client. Before launch I was responsible for conducting testing and quality assurance check to ensure the final product matches final designs and all the functionality works as specified and meets user needs.
Planning and Wireframing
At the initial stage of the project I've conducted qualitative research focused on finding how to successfully translate project objectives into design.
The research was done through observation of other websites and other designs that shared similar goals. The final outcome was set of design examples categorized into patterns/elements, e.g. rich use of large photos, elegant typography, colours etc from which I've selected the ones that were the best fit for the project and translated them into initial look and feel and final designs.
Highly visual, beautiful homepage features main sections of the website and presents the beauty of Portmarnock Golf Club.
