DXB202 QUT l Week 7 l Textures and Lighting

Theme:
Moving on from photography and illustrations, this week we concentrate more on textures and patterns. To further improve and challenge our creative illustrations, this week our focus is to take different image of textures to experiment.

From natural elements to buildings and everything around us could be used for textures. This week was very interesting as students got to learn different skills and techniques to utilise different textures to create reflective and illustrative artworks.

Inspiration:
With each texture, there are a range of variety and possibilities to experiment and showcase for each occasions. Similar to my other art styles, I prefer simple and minimalistic designs thus, my textures and patterns will probably have similar styles with each other. An example is Anne Belmont who I find really inspirational as her works are all very detailed and centred around nature,
(Belmont, n.d.)
Day 1 Image 1: House of Brick
Technique:
Canon ISO 400 f/4 1/60s 18-55@24mm
Photoshop

Process:
The photo was taken with flash at a slightly higher angle. Exposure was increase along with contrast and brightness.

Reasoning:
Brick is a basic foundation of a house. It serves as a protection and represents stability. With a brick by itself, it means nothing and is weak but when placed together, it is strong.

Reflection:
An improvement that can be made in the future is selecting a better angle of the texture. I enjoyed changing the focus to capture the best angle. I really enjoyed the colour scheme of the brink along with the photo composition.
Day 2 Image 2: Sunny Day
Technique:
Canon ISO 100 f/4 1/2500s 18-55@24mm
Photoshop

Process:
The image was taken during a clear day around midday with a degree of around 100. It was not taken with flash. The photo was taken with natural lighting so the image was already really nice without any editing.

Reasoning:
That day, the weather was very nice; it was clear and there was a lovely breeze throughout the day. I felt like I had to capture the moment.

Reflection:
The process of taking the photo was very refreshing and relaxing.
Day 3 Image 3: Green Flowers
Technique:
Canon ISO320 f/4

Process:
The image was taken at a 30 degree angle with flash.

Reasoning:
The flower is actually from a flower pot situated on my living room wall for more than 20 years. Growing up with the flower, I have created an emotional attachment towards the object

Reflection:
I was surprised with the kind of work and editing that could be done to that simple image. Although the image looked really busy crowded, through my tutorial, it was actually really fun to experiment with different tools.
Day 4 Image 4: Sky after the Rain
Technique:
Iphone 6 plus

Process:
The image was taken after it had finished raining. It was taken at a 100 degree angle without the flash. The image was taken with a few tries and was selected with no interrupting elements such as trees.

Reasoning:
I have always found raining days to be comforting and relaxing especially with the breeze coming in after the rain. With grey clouds, it creates a calming atmosphere and soothing mood.

Reflection:
The image is not as clear and focused as I hoped it would be. There was not much definition in the photo so unless labelled, it is hard to tell that it is they sky.
Day 5 Image 5: Texture
Technique:
Canon ISO400

Process:
The image was taken during this week’s tutorial. It was taken at a close distance, with no editing done to the photo.

Reasoning:
The image is one of the first few captures surrounding the theme of textures and patterns.

Reflection:
I actually had no real expectations of finding textures around me but it was surprising when I started experimenting. I realised textures could be found anywhere no matter how small it is. It was new knowledge and experience for me this week to learn that something simple and insignificant can be turned into a tool and/or artwork.
