Explanation ::
Our goal for the branding of Minerva’s Open Day was to create a fun, expressive, and very tasteful design that would represent an art academy that encompasses a variety of studies. Because of the school’s commitment to experimentation and the love of art, we wanted to have a look that delivered layers, texture, bright color, movement, and feel as if it was hand-made.
Inspiration ::
Our research started with us asking each other why we chose to come to the Minerva to study art and from there we made a list of key words to inspire our project. We set out to come up with ideas create sketches. Our group met back up and discovered that although we all had different styles, we shared the same vision for this project. We wanted it to be focused on text rather than illustrations but still have the feeling that it was made by hand. We also loved the idea of making it interactive by having different elements that could be moved revealing more information about the event. Our idea of a “pop-up book poster” morphed into the idea of a layered screen print/pop art design. Like the pop art movement, Open Day at Minerva should evoke a reaction by pulling from familiar aspects of art, mass culture, and look exciting for incoming students.

Challenges ::
Our road to this outcome came with some challenges. Ipek and I had just arrived from different countries so it was difficult for us to come up with ideas about how Minerva would like to promote itself. Luckily our 3rd group member, Wytse, had been here longer than a few days and guided us in the right direction. As we started to get inspired and draw sketches, we slowly realized that our ideas were too big for the time limit on this project. Fortunately, we had many great ideas to bounce off of each other and eventually landed on an Opening Day image that pleased us all.
