Working in collaboration with the startup company STRYD, We were tasked with designing the 3rd Gen STRYD foot pod for runners. A design language that reflects the values of professional runners, yet has an overall mainstream appeal. This design project encompassed everything from the ID of the product as well as packaging, and art direction. This 2020 design was meant as a follow up to the 2016 STRYD design Language. The goal was to keep the design consistent while accommodating all the new technology enhancements.
Abstraction of Nature: Users of STRYD run primarily out doors in a variety of natural environments. The inspiration behind STRYD was pulled from mountain contours and water ripples in order to create an abstract but familiar form that separates this device from other CE wearables.
STRYD, a shoe-mounted power meter, measures your running efficiency, pinpoints your performance bottleneck, and guides you through personalized cardiovascular and strength training, as well as form improvements, so you can improve your efficiency and run faster. STRYD also provides the power-based training intensity control and race-day pacing you have grown to expect.
Runners start by pairing STRYD with a variety of smartphones or GPS running watches. STRYD automatically ends data to these devices during runs.
A variety of forms exploring STRYD forms inspired by fluid motions and mountain topography. These sketches also explore LED treatment, as well as clip forms and wind sensor locations, and designs.
The clip was designed and engineered to be reliable and secure. We also developed a matching charging dock
Extremely Durable and water resistant design
The 2020 STRYD pod introduced wind sensing as a way to get accurate power reading even when running against the wind.
We worked hard to optimize the battery size while maintaining the overall size and similar weight to the 2016 pod; this ensured that STRYD would be the perfect running companion: Users can forget that they're even wearing STRYD, and perform at their peak.

The packaging was designed to highlight the product in a premium, cost effective, and durable manner. Special care was taken to minimize the amount of packaging used while still generating an impactful display and unboxing experience.
