There are many popular destination spots to visit in Scotland, but part of the nation’s charm lies in its smaller, more subdued villages. Here are two of the smaller, but no less interesting, towns in Scotland.

Located on the Isle of Skye, Portee gives picturesque views of its namesake Loch, as well as the Sound of Raasay. The name of the town traces its roots back to Gaelic language and means “King’s Port” in honor of James V and his fleet’s visit in 1540. Portee is the largest town on the Isle of Skye, and bears much history as one of the main ports from which Scots left their country en route to North America.

Another beautiful harbor town, Tobermory is the main hub of the Isle of Mull. One of its unique features is that many of the shops and houses are painted in bright, eye-popping colors. The BBC television series Balamory was filmed in the town, which was originally founded in 1788 as a fishing port. A legend among the locals is that a ship full of gold from the Spanish Armada lies sunken somewhere beneath the harbor.
