Bachelor's degree project / Randomly generated visuals We fear disorder and wish for order. We go after the trouble makers of society. We would rather have our bedroom, our office or our paperwork in a state of order rather than one of disorder. But are we really able to be objective about our notions of order and disorder ? Can we find a way to generate ordered disorder and represent it visually ? The Boltzmann method answers this question by enabling the generation of an image from a single computer file with an algorithm based on random components. First of all randomly generated images are arranged in an orderly fashion, then the file is converted to numbers using a cryptographic hashing function called SHA-1. Nous craignons le désordre et désirons l’ordre.
Nous pourchassons, dans la vie sociale, les fauteurs de désordre.
Nous préférons une chambre, un bureau ou des papiers en ordre plutôt qu’en désordre.
Or est-on en mesure de donner aux notions d’ordre et de désordre un contenu objectif ?
Peut-on trouver un moyen ordonné de générer du désordre et de le représenter visuellement ?

La méthode Boltzmann répond à cette question en permettant de générer une image unique en fonction d’un fichier informatique à partir d’un algorithme reposant sur des composantes aléatoires.
D’un côté des images générées aléatoirement sont agencées de manière ordonnée et de l’autre côté le fichier est converti en chiffres en utilisant une fonction de hachage cryptographique appelée SHA-1.

Cette méthode à la frontière entre le déterminisme et le hasard peut alors être appliquée à de multiples domaines
tels que des pochettes de musique dépendant du fichier mp3, une couverture de livre en fonction du texte qu’il contient,
un t-shirt en fonction du nom de la personne qui le porte…
