In their own words, The Bearded Ladies are “an experimental cabaret group devoted to exploiting all the possibilities of intimate theater through beautiful songs, tricked-out costume changes, drag, and virtuosic DIY prop construction. With wit and homespun sparkle, we tackle questions of popular culture, sex and gender politics, identity, and artistic invention.” They are, simply, wonderful.
For their intimate-yet-outrageous presence, they needed an identity rooted in the familiar, but with a twist. The old theater feeling – the velvet, the brass, the prints, the history – delivered with a wink. Flirty, feminine graphic forms mix with masculine type. Shadows that subvert and obscure gender lines. Their total identity system is iconic, but adaptable: offering flexibility and verve to parallel their theatrical feats.
Both Lady and Beard were featured in the first-ever CMYK Magazine Professional Design Showcase, along with some other amazing peer work that may or may not have later been reproduced on cardboard props.
