Typography History Poster

Reflection

This poster was made for Typography class. Our project was to create a poster about a history of certain font, and I have chosen Futura, which was designed by Paul Renner in 1927.

To express its name, I made my concept as retro future and simplicity. As I mentioned in work-in-progress, I got inspirations from classic Sci-Fi films and shows, such as Star Trek, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Tomorrowland, and so on. My goal was to make the viewers feel the scence of science from the poster.

Until the final poster had been completed, I was working on two of the designs; one featuring a space ship, and the other one featuring an atom mark. I really like both designs, but I had to turn the former one down because it was focusing too much on the illustration, but not on the font. However, I have also posted that poster on Behance, and you could find it from this link. https://www.behance.net/gallery/42580623/Turned-down-typography-poster

This project was all about struggle with design and information. If I put many information in the poster, the balance of the design may collapse, but I had to put paragraph about the history of the font in the way matches to the poster because that was the criteria of the project. As I mentioned in the last paragraph, I did like the spaceship poster, but if this were an actual work in the graphic design industry, how I like the work does not really matter. Sometime I might have to bend my opinion to fulfill the client's requirement. Through this project, I learned seeking the compromising point is also an important ability for a graphic designers.
