Project 1 Unit - Concept Art

The Process Behind the Logo (Kayleigh)The team started by brainstorming what the members may have in common to get an idea of what they each liked. The conversation ended up on the show RWBY (pronounced ruby), which both Kade and Kayleigh enjoy. From there we decided to try out using the shows unique naming system which consists of using the first letter of each characters name to form their team name. For example team RWBY consists of Ruby, Wiese, Blake, and Yang. Our team has one E and three K's, so we played around with various combinations eventually settling on Gekko.

For the logo itself Kayleigh volunteered on designing it, starting with finding reference photos of actual geckos and drawing thumbnails of possible positions for it to be in. One of the thumbnails became the final pose design. Variations on the colour pallets were then created with the team voting on using the fourth design, but suggested it be in a colour rather then in greyscale. With this in mind number five was created and became the final design for the logo.

Concept Art (also know as visual development) is the core of any visual pre-production.

Basic Introduction to Concept Art:
- Modern concept art is mostly done using digital tools such as Photoshop and tablets
- Concept art is a key part of any visual pre-production for things such as video games, animated movies/movies with in-depth special effects, comics and graphic novels, etc.…
- Everything from environments to character design to items and game hubs had to have been designed by an artist most likely multiple times
- No matter how good the writer or how many details you describe, everyone will imagine the same objects countless different ways, or on the rare occasion were everyone agrees on how it’s visual rendered it may not be as impressive as they thought
- Concept art is (typically) used to set tone and guidelines for the style of the project

Famous projects with amazing concept art:
- Marvels Avengers
- Star Wars
- Avatar
- Inside Out
- Wall-E
- Hellboy

3 distinct periods of the media:
- 1930-1940’s ink, watercolor, pencils and oil/acrylic (Disney’s Snow White)
- 1970’s pencil on paper (example The AristoCats)
- Wacom Cintiq 22HD invented in 2013

The importance of 3 key individuals from the field:
- Craig Mullins (born 1964) is often considered to be one of the first to pioneer in the field of digital painting.
- Gustaf Tenggren (born 1896) is known for his Arthur Rackham-influenced fairy-tale style and use of silhouetted figures with caricatured faces.
- Albert Hurter

3 major advancements in technology/eras for the media:
- Graphic Tablets
- Modern paint packages can simulate the blending of colour the same way paint would blend on canvas
- Creation of programs such as Corel Painter and Photoshop

Horizon 1985 How to film the impossible (doc on youtube)
Pitch: Our group Gekko will be doing a presentation on concept art, hoping to effectively engage the class through the basic history and given insight we have to share from our research as well as develop and strengthen our group working skills. This includes, most importantly, visuals from popular movies, video games and TV shows. We will also be going through the basic timeline of the medium to showcase the key individuals, key companies, and milestones/breakthroughs in concept art.

5 Project Goals:
- Give audience a basic understanding of the subject while engaging their attention
- Provide good eye contact/Refrain from looking at notes by practicing presentation
- Stay within the 2:30-3:00min mark
- Speak at a good volume
- Complete on time
