3D Models for SD Museum of Art Education Program

3ds Max Models for
Silk Road Museum Education Program

I built five models in 3ds Max for the San Diego Museum of Art / Balboa Park, School in The Park program. These models were then incorporated into freshAiR, a custom "Augmented Reality" application. The models were viewed on 8" tablet computers by 4th grade students in the program, although the original target device was a smartphone with a much smaller screen.

3dS Max Renders
These first two shots show views of the composite "marketplace" 3D model, set inside of a panoramic background. Unfortunately, the Augmented Reality Software did not support panoramas, so the background was eliminated, and a smaller, rectangular section of the ground was used in the final model. This introductory model allowed the students to click on any of the individual stalls to go to a more detailed model featuring the specific craft.
This is the individual, detailed "Stone Carver" model, featuring a number of tools and materials, plus a price sheet which facilitated the students' use of virtual money to make "purchases" as a part of the overall educational program.
This is the "Calligraphy" model, showing tools and materials loosely based on what was available along the Silk Road in the 15th century. A price sheet sits on the desk for the students to reference when deciding what tools and materials to "purchase".
These two shots show the "Weaver" model, which introduced the students to 15th century technology available in this discipline. As with all of the individual models, there is a price sheet, plus period tools and material available for "purchase".
Shown above is the individual "Potter" model. Below is a render of a simplified version, integrated into the "Composite Marketplace" model. Although simplified for use in the composite model, I added logs and a flame effect inside of the kiln.
 8" Tablet Computer Screen Captures
This and the following images are screen captures from an 8" tablet computer showing how the models looked when superimposed by the Augmented Reality software over the target (an image in a binder sleeve).
