Architecture Interruptus
exhibition identity and poster series
Architecture Interruptus is an exhibition for the Wexner Center for the Arts that showcases the powerful
histor
y and beauty behind Le Corbusier's Church of Saint Pierre. The church, located in Firminy, France,
was designed by Le Corbusier; however construction did not even begin on the church until well after his
death. The project was only recently brought to completion by his prodigy, José Oubrerie, who sought
to finish the work that Corbusier began as an homage to the great architect. For this exhibition I created
two separate identities and poster concepts for the Wexner Center.
Exhibition Mark
The first step in developing poster concepts for Architecture
Interruptus was to develop a mark for the exhibition as a whole.
The mark I developed was inspired by the structure of Le
Corbusier's church; the "A" mimics the shape of the building
and is also representative of the exhibitions title. An "i" is
knocked into the negative space of the "A" to complete the
reference to the title of the exhibition.

Poster Concept 1
In the design of his Church of Saint Pierre, Le Corbusier
included many geometrically shaped stained glass windows
through which colored light could shine and radiate throughout
the space. I designed the first poster with this idea in mind,
wanting to capture the beauty of light shining and flickering
through transparent glass within the church in Firminy.
Poster Concept 1 (secondary)
I created both black and white versions of the first
poster concept to be used as variety, and also as an
acknowledgement of the two different architects it
took to bring Le Corbusier's work to completion.

Concept 2 Type Treatment
Poster Concept 2
For the second poster’s design
I focused more
on the geometric nature of the church in Firminy
by utilizing primary colors and shapes rather
than focusing on the play of light created by the
structure
of the church. I also incorporated the
use of photography as one
of the main elements
of the design. All the photographs used are from
the interior
of The Church of Saint Pierre.
