Olivehattan: Comic Strip Installation
Olivehattan
A 25-foot comic strip installation

The Olivehattan installationconsists of five groups of panels (three panels within each group) that hangfrom jail cell doors, telling the story of a sad olive who commits suicide andturns into The Dirty Martini, scouring the lamp-lit streets of Olivehattan tokill its prey. The comic strip juts in and out like a heartbeat, pacing eachmoment like a well-designed comics page.

By experimenting with thematerials used to construct his comics, as well as the physical space wherethey will be viewed, my goal is to create experimental comics (see MFA thesis)that challenge the popular conception that comics exist only in book form. Thegoal of Olivehattan is to begin a discussion surrounding the idea thatcomics can be works of visual art displayed in galleries and other publicspaces. With the objectives of the small-press comics that emerged in Franceduring the 1990’s in mind, I’m attempting to distance myself from theestablished, large publishers whose goal it is to mass produce a commodityinstead of a work of art. As with all forms of experimental comics, Olivehattanis not interested in redefining comics but tries to expand upon traditionalideas of what comics are by showing what they can be.
