Peak Stuff
This issues theme centers around the idea of 'Peak Stuff'. Although not a familiar term, it was brought to light by Steve Howard, the head of sustainability at IKEA. "If we look at a global basis, in the West we probably hit peak oil. I’d say we’ve hit peak red meat, peak sugar, peak stuff … peak home furnishings."
Peak stuff is the idea that we have reached max capacity for materialistic things. We no longer gain fulfillment by accumulating vast amounts of stuff. It seems that in Western developed countries people are moving toward the idea of experiences and ideas, over 'stuff.' It turns out ‘peak stuff’ is a theory generating quite a lot a thought.
In this issue of ‘Ligature Journal’ we narrow our focus of 'Peak Stuff' and ask ourselves "What is our response and responsibilities as designers?"
Cover:
Have you ever purchased fro-yo and buried it under a mountain of toppings so large that you begin to question whether you can still call it fro-yo? The cover ponders this same question about identity. In an age of fast fashion and disposable consumables, are people becoming defined by accessories and stuff rather than who they truly are?
Wrap:
The wrap is made up of more than 100 quotes about 'Peak Stuff' from the journal. The quotes were then layered over an illustration from the journal depicting copious amounts of stuff. The wrap then unfolds to reveal a poster.
The Ultimate Minimalist Spread:
Inspired by the 10 items Gandhi owned at the time of his death.
Who wants to talk anyway? Spread:
A comical look at IKEA catalogues & other home-wares stores that offer the complete home package just to fill unflattering empty spaces. Do you use your dining table?
Short Items of interest:
Check out the Ligature Journal Instagram page @ligaturejournal . Make sure to have a look at the #kerbyourstuff feed; upload and tag your own photos of discarded 'stuff.'
