Swing 360: the go-pro array

The go-pro array is essentially 32 go-pros in a piece of curved track that we use to create a “Matrix” bullet time effect of the golf swing.

The golf instruction would always try to find a better, more exciting way to show the golf swing and that's why -in association with the Golf Channel- we created this rig that enables us to capture a freeze frame in any part of the golf swing and look at that same exact moment in time from 32 different angles.

Instead of just going from one camera to the other; going from side 90 straight to down the line, we have the audience rotating completely around, so even in between the side 90 and down the line, they are getting so much more information as to what’s going on in the golf swing.

The array is originally a 12-foot by 6-inch circle that can be broken down into quarters. So we can do a 90 degree, a 180, and a 360 shot.

Once we go to the field, we set up the array and use a tennis ball on a C-stand and a clap as references in order to be able to synchronize and match all the cameras in the post-production phase.

At the end, we get the footage and use After Effects to synchronize all the cameras and build "the move". The array will sometimes show up in some of the cameras, so we use Photoshop to erase whatever we don't want on the shot. And the result is really smooth!

This rig really opens up a lot of different opportunities to come up with different ideas of how to look at the golf instruction in a cool, different way, educate people, and really be able to analyze the golf swing.
