In the north of Portugal shale is a very common type of rock. It’s so common and abundant that people use it as if it was wood, especially in vineyards, houses and also as decoration.

This pictures are from a small quarry near Guarda. They were trimming down big chunks of shale until they are around 10 cms wide so they can be used as a support stakes on vineyards.
