Veronica Bedoya's profile

Wave Hill Space Botany Laboratory

The given site for this project was a steep hill topography where I decided to analyze the several pathways within the lot. I chose to compare the beginning and ending views of each pathway and selected the walkway in which such initial and final views were most different. Thus, emphasizing the contrasting moments that will be present throughout the project.
The precedent projects stressed the process of experiential architecture through its entrances, exits and circulation as well as incorporated its landscape into its design. Hadid's The Peak exaggerated an entrance that is inclusive to the overall structure while Siza's Leca Pools create horizontal paths throughout the site using vertical walls which create contrasting entrance/exit views. The entrance seems to be a flat horizontal structure and from the exit looking back towards is a dense design of the vertical walls incorporated with the rocky landscape.
Using the precedents main ideas, I manipulated the topography to clearly be incorporated into the project; This created three stories of structure that emphasized a steeper slope which allowed for more contrasting entrance and exit views.
The vertical walls stagger throughout the project to generate thin, horizontal spaces which are covered by a singular wrapping skin that follows the main path of circulation. The walls also function as stairs. This skin along with its long spaces create an experiential process beginning at the top entrance of the laboratory being a gallery, lowering in altitude to arrive to an enclosed laboratory that resides within the ground, going down one story being an open classroom that leads to an open courtyard. Underneath is an enclosed lecture hall that leads to the exit at the opposite side as the entrance.
With the structure being submerged into the landscape there is a variation of open and enclosed spaces, further playing with experiential moments.
